Article Summary
Unlimited Patience

A former UK Prime Minister, known affectionately (!) as the Iron Lady, is quoted as once saying in an interview, “I am extraordinarily patient provided I get my own way in the end.” St Augustine referred to patience as “the companion of wisdom” and an old Chinese proverb warns starkly that although “One moment of patience can ward off disaster...one moment of impatience can ruin a whole life.”

Praying with imagination

Jesus once told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. (Matthew 18:1) Jesus wouldn’t have had to do this unless His disciples were tempted at times to give up praying; a temptation which most of us, I’m sure, can relate to. In a hectic, sceptical world, where time is at a premium and with so many demands pressing in our lives, always praying and not giving up isn’t likely to come naturally to us.

Personal internet health-check

It can be tempting to jump straight to thinking that if you have effective filter or accountability software on your computer, then your relationship with the internet must be healthy, but this article examines our overall approach to interacting online by asking some personal questions in six different areas and then offering some suggestions for redeeming your time online using the same categories.

Homosexuality: Grace and Truth

Over the last 40 years or so, same-sex sexual relationships have become increasingly accepted in society. It’s no longer quite the taboo that it used to be for individuals to embrace a gay or lesbian identity. Even at school, it’s not uncommon for boys and girls in their early teens, even sometimes pre-teens, to “come out” and declare themselves amongst their friends to be gay.

But how will you respond when the person wondering about their sexuality is someone you know and care about?  Maybe someone in your church?

Original temptation

The majority of us are familiar, I’m sure, with the concept of original sin in Genesis 3. Sometimes, though, Christians talk as if the essence of sin is breaking rules. I remember being taught at Sunday School that Adam and Eve broke the one and only rule God gave them when they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I’ve since learned, however, that the essence of sin is far more serious than simply breaking rules.

Supporting people with homosexual struggles

The culture in which we live today is one that is highly charged sexually.  All around us are magazine articles, advertisements, TV soap stories and documentaries etc constantly challenging us to focus on our sexual identity.  Official documents often now ask our sexual orientation (as if that is any business of anybody but ourselves) and we see debates on sexual issues within some mainstream denominations creating schism and breakdown in relationships.

Securing your identity

The media regularly reminds us of the dangers of identity theft, which according to the BBC Money Programme is growing at the rate of 500% year on year and is costing the UK economy an estimated £1.7bn a year. Some 6 million people in the UK claim to have been a victim of identity theft. One article I read recently urged me to take various precautions to secure my identity, including shredding all documents containing my personal details – “shred often and shred well” the writer insisted!

A wife’s response to unfaithfulness

If you are married to a man who has some type of sexual addiction, you know intense pain.  His weakness might be pornography or prostitution or homosexuality.  In my case, my husband was a transsexual.  So though we may each have a different slant on it, we are basically in the same place when it comes to the source of our pain.  I would describe it in two words - “broken covenant.”  At some point, the marriage covenant was broken .... then repeatedly .... over and over again.

The Gospel and gay people

Evangelists are usually pessimistic when it comes to sharing the Gospel with gays and lesbians. In this article, Martin Hallett deals honestly with the challenges in reaching out to the gay community.

No wonder they call it the Web

This article starts off with describing how we can easily get caught up in the internet like a fly gets caught in a spider's web. The author describes the extent the problem and then provides some very practical advice on how to escape to greater freedom.
