Some Ways Forward with Christ
  1. We must seek to understand and appreciate the dilemma many Christians face with their sexuality, emotionally, sexually and socially. How tempting it can be to wander off the ‘narrow road’ of following Christ to the, often seemingly fulfilling, relationships available if Scriptural truths are compromised. We must recognise the choice we all have to follow Christ and that it will be costly. We must encourage people to follow Christ because of what He has done for them at the Cross, not simply for what He may do for us in this life.
Defining "True Freedom"

At a recent speaking engagement in Northern Ireland I was asked by a young man how I would define ‘true freedom’ as it relates to the area of struggles with same-sex attractions. Did I believe that the defining mark of experiencing true freedom is that an individual is completely set free from same-sex struggles and goes on to experience heterosexual attractions?

Living Waters: "False Intimacy" Conference

False Intimacy is a one-day conference addressing the pastoral issues faced by ministers and church leaders when helping those struggling with sexual purity, pornography use and sex addiction both within and outside the church.  A recent survey by CARE found that 97% of church leaders believe online pornography to be a serious issue within the church, but

Praying with imagination

Jesus once told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. (Matthew 18:1) Jesus wouldn’t have had to do this unless His disciples were tempted at times to give up praying; a temptation which most of us, I’m sure, can relate to. In a hectic, sceptical world, where time is at a premium and with so many demands pressing in our lives, always praying and not giving up isn’t likely to come naturally to us.

Personal internet health-check

It can be tempting to jump straight to thinking that if you have effective filter or accountability software on your computer, then your relationship with the internet must be healthy, but this article examines our overall approach to interacting online by asking some personal questions in six different areas and then offering some suggestions for redeeming your time online using the same categories.

Supporting people with homosexual struggles

The culture in which we live today is one that is highly charged sexually.  All around us are magazine articles, advertisements, TV soap stories and documentaries etc constantly challenging us to focus on our sexual identity.  Official documents often now ask our sexual orientation (as if that is any business of anybody but ourselves) and we see debates on sexual issues within some mainstream denominations creating schism and breakdown in relationships.

In this climate, the needs of individuals who struggle with sexual issues, especially those who profess a Christian faith and wish to live in godly ways, are too easily drowned out by the “sexual noise” round about us.  They can often be afraid to express their struggles, and when they do, they may not be heard as well as they need to be.  This can be most acute for those who might classify themselves as having a sexual orientation other than heterosexual.

The challenge to us as pastoral workers is to seek out some keys that will enable us to best support those who come to us for help with their struggles.  I hope to provide a few pointers in this article.

Securing your identity

The media regularly reminds us of the dangers of identity theft, which according to the BBC Money Programme is growing at the rate of 500% year on year and is costing the UK economy an estimated £1.7bn a year. Some 6 million people in the UK claim to have been a victim of identity theft. One article I read recently urged me to take various precautions to secure my identity, including shredding all documents containing my personal details – “shred often and shred well” the writer insisted!

Witnessing to gay friends

Evangelists are usually pessimistic when it comes to sharing the Gospel with gays and lesbians. In this article, Martin Hallett deals honestly with the challenges in reaching out to the gay community.

No wonder they call it the Web

This article starts off with describing how we can easily get caught up in the internet like a fly gets caught in a spider's web. The author describes the extent the problem and then provides some very practical advice on how to escape to greater freedom.

Singleness - A new approach?

You will be hard pressed to find singleness as we use the term today mentioned in the Bible.  In fact you won’t find it at all!  When we talk about singleness or being single what do you think of?
