One of those reasons related to a struggle over what seemed like an accepted evangelical narrative – one that said I must marry and have children if I’m ever to advance into spiritual adulthood. Probably many TFT members have felt that, at times, the Church has told them that singleness is second best.

Theology of singleness

Dani Treweek serves as a theological researcher in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney. In this scholarly book, she seeks to demonstrate what she calls “the unique intelligibility and privileged inhabitability of singleness” in the lives of God’s people, and in the Church. Treweek presents a theology of singleness that is rooted in the age that is coming on the other side of Christ’s return, arguing that singleness in this age allows us to anticipate the completion of our union with Christ in a way that is distinct from, but equal in beauty to, biblical marriage.

This is an academic book, coming out of Treweek’s doctoral studies. It is extremely well researched, and would make a great starting place for anyone wanting to do a significant study of their own on the topic. That shouldn’t put off other types of reader though, as church leaders and those with a more casual interest in the topic would likely find it quite readable. The book is helpfully broken down into four parts, and chapters can be read independently of each other.

History and culture of singleness

Treweek opens the book in part one by looking at perceptions of singleness through history in both church and culture. Want to know how unmarried women went from being thought of as the epitome of purity and beauty to being thought of as ‘spinsters’, or worse, a threat to traditional family values? The first part of the book has you covered. The second part of the book turns to address some of the missteps the church has taken in its attitude towards singleness. This was one of my favourite parts of the book, as it gave language to the narrative that has been heard by many of my single brothers and sisters. That singleness is characterised by lack, inadequacy and unfulfillment. Treweek provides a critique of this view.

Part three is the lengthiest and most academically dense part of the book. Treweek recognises that Christianity hasn’t always thought the same way about singleness as it does today. Here, she seeks to mine the riches of Christian thought through history, to see what lessons there might be for the modern age. Attention is given to three fields of study: church history, biblical exegesis (focusing mainly on Matthew 22 and 1 Corinthians 7) and the thought of four noteworthy theologians. The final part of the book weaves all that has gone before together and paints a positive vision of singleness as a gift for both individual disciples and the wider Church.

Emotional breadth

A strength of this book, which you don’t often see in academic works, is that Treweek is acutely aware of the complex gamut of emotion that comes with talking about these subjects. It actually made me think about something I said at a recent speaking engagement about the temporality of human marriage; owing to Matthew 22 teaching there will be no marriage in the age to come, as perhaps sounding a little insensitive towards those in the room who are happily married. Here, Treweek helpfully points to RC Sproul, who reminds us that while legal/covenantal relationships of that type between believers will not exist in the new creation, our love for one another will be made perfect and, therefore, will only increase.

God’s design

This isn’t an especially practical book. If you’re looking for some punchy, handy hints on how to make the most of your singleness as a Christian, or how to facilitate the best conditions for Christian community, this won’t be for you. What this book will give you is a deeper understanding of the significance of singleness and how it relates to other areas of theology (particularly eschatology). As theoretical as that sounds, understanding God’s design can help us to live at ease with our circumstances and know our place in His plans and purposes. For the person who struggles with their own singleness, that just might be the reassurance needed to keep going and press into the Lord.

This article was originally published in the Spring 2024 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. I’m a Christian.” “I feel so guilty.” “Do you think I am possessed?” Many times I have heard these, or similar statements, from those experiencing some form of mental or emotional distress or dis-ease. Sometimes this has been fuelled by a person’s engagement with scripture, the teaching they have received or the implicit ethos of the faith group they belong to.

But is this how God wants us to think and feel? What is God’s response to His people when they are struggling with anxiety, depression, psychoses and a myriad of other mental health issues? It is true that His word tells us to ‘Rejoice in the Lord always’ (Philippians 4:4) and ‘Do not be anxious about anything’ (Philippians 4:6). However, taken out of context, this can lead to the belief that our mental ailments are due to spiritual poverty.

We need to care for our bodies, as well as our minds and souls

It is important to understand that the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual parts of our beings all interact. And God knows this! Perhaps nowhere is this highlighted more than in the way God deals with Elijah. Why not pause and read 1 Kings chapters 18 and 19 and then we will look at how God met Elijah in his hour of need?
Elijah went from the heights of Mount Carmel to the depths of not wanting to be alive. He went from a place of great confidence in God, to a place of hopelessness. Elijah, who was a man just like us (James 5:17) must have been ecstatic at the top of Carmel. His God had shown Himself to be the ruler by decisively defeating the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:16-46). Elijah would have been on a real spiritual and emotional high.

Yet a short while later we see the low of Beersheba: fear, running for his life, wishing he was dead, isolating himself and the loss of confidence in God. If he was not doubting God, he was certainly doubting His plans: depression, despondency, despair and self-pity.What a contrast to the bold, courageous Elijah who confronted King Ahab and the prophets of Baal! Perhaps when we see Elijah in this state, we more easily identify with him being human, just as we are. God knew exactly what Elijah needed. He dealt with him in a holistic way.

God cares for our bodies

God cared for Elijah physically, giving him the food, water and sleep that he needed (1 Kings 19:6-8). Sometimes we can ignore or lessen the importance of our physical well-being. After all, it is the spiritual part of us that matters, isn’t it? Elijah is emotionally and physically spent. He had just run 17 miles after all. But here God’s first approach to Elijah isn’t for the angel to tell him to believe more or have more faith. Elijah needs to sleep and eat. Twice the angel comes to him, telling him to fill himself with sustenance for the journey. It is important that we do what we can to care for our bodies, as well as our minds and souls.

God renews our minds

Elijah had an unbalanced view of things (1 Kings 19:10, 14). But God challenged his thinking by asking him the same question twice: ‘What are you doing here Elijah?’ (1 Kings 19:9,13). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy isn’t new!! The way we think really does affect the way we feel and behave: “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12: 1-2). We don’t all have the same intellectual capacity. But we should allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and to think things through if we are able. We shouldn’t be afraid of this either. Truth is truth and it will prevail in Christ.

So, God demonstrated His power again, albeit in a different way: by meeting Elijah’s physical and emotional needs. Then Elijah set off again, journeying for 40 days and 40 nights (1 Kings 19:8). He went to the same mountain where Moses met with God, Mount Horeb (Mount Sinai). God again asked Elijah, “What are you doing here?” Elijah once more answered rather grumpily and negatively, “I am the only one left and they are trying to kill me too.” (1 Kings 19:10)

God refreshes our spirits

God refreshed Elijah’s spirit by displaying His power, glory and tenderness (1 Kings 19:11-15). Sometimes we need to have God speak to us in powerful ways that force us out of our comfort zones. In this instance, God was not ‘in’ the wind, the earthquake or fire. He was ‘passing by’. I must admit this is one of the most puzzling parts of this account. It perhaps reinforces the surprising nature of God. Where Elijah probably expects God to manifest Himself in the powerful displays of wind, earthquake or fire, He instead shows up in a gentle whisper, a still small voice. Elijah’s senses are likely still on high alert after the great victory on Carmel and then the descent into despair. So, God, lovingly, speaks to him in a gentle whisper, a still small voice.

Elijah recognised the voice of God. Learning to discern God’s gentle nudges can take time and practice. But if we incline our spiritual ears and our hearts, we will hear Him. As we test out what we believe God is saying, checking it against scripture, perhaps talking with a trusted Christian friend, we will grow in confidence and trust.

Despite Elijah’s wobble, God does not sideline him. Instead, He gives him fresh instructions and tasks. He is reminded he is not on his own. In fact, God gives Elijah a team to be part of: the kings and his successor, Elisha (1 Kings 19:15-21).

God is with us

As God was with Elijah, so He will be with us.

Christians are not immune to struggles with our mental health - why should we be? It is part of being a member of the fallen human race, in the same way that physical illness is. Those who experience same-sex attraction are no less likely to battle with mental health than anyone else. The internal conflict, the isolation, and the battle against sinful thoughts and behaviour, can all be a factor in destabilising the mental health of the person who seeks to follow Christ.

But we have a gracious, compassionate, loving God who comes alongside us and will deal with us gently. He knows our needs. Through His word, His Spirit and our fellow believers, He will minister to our bodies, minds and souls.

This article was originally published in the Spring 2024 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. As the afternoon session closed, bringing another cycle of LLF(Living in Life and Faith) debates to an end, I caught the eye of the lady sitting to my right. We silently shook our heads at each other in polite and pained disappointment at what had happened. Giving a look around the circular hall, she said, “I can’t feel Jesus here anywhere. I just don’t know where He is.”

What has made me reflect most on this encounter was, to my shame, what I silently thought in response: “Well, what did you think was going to happen?” I am not pleased with that response; but it was true that I felt like that. I nodded in vague agreement and mumbled some meagre encouragement as I slid along the row of seats on my way out.

We may grow tired, but God doesn’t

As an ordinand (a person training to be a minister), who is same-sex attracted, this past year has had a dull inevitability about it. To be sure, I’m convinced as ever that Christ is building His church. But watching the drip-drip, bit-by-bit nature of the Church of England’s letting go of the Lord’s teaching on marriage and sex is wearying.

In light of current goings on, my fellow orthodox ordinands and I have been thinking a great deal about how to navigate fellowship, communion services, curacies, ordinations and licensing from diocesan structures that we sadly believe to be departing the Bible’s life-giving sexual ethic. To be candid, I find myself annoyed that this is something I even have to spend time thinking about.

But the Lord is kind. When my resilience for this work has been wearing thin this past year, I have been so encouraged by the faithfulness of my church and its leaders, as well as the hundreds of fellow ordinands - evangelical, catholic and others - who have united in prayer and support. I dearly pray that all Ascend readers can point to the Lord’s kindness in their daily lives when resilience in the face of the world, the flesh and the devil is low.

In fact, stop reading this article right now. I’m serious. Spend a few minutes praying before we continue.

Why not identify three things in your life this past year, big or small, through which your shepherd-king has demonstrated His boundless love for you? You, his vulnerable, every-wandering little sheep. Close your eyes and spend a few minutes thanking and praising Him now.

Welcome back! He's great, isn’t He?

I want to spend some time now reflecting on and encouraging us from the drama of Isaiah 36-37. Personally, I have found these chapters to be a timely balm following the November synod. The weariness of Lord’s people, the pride of the world and the apparent inevitability of historical progress and outcomes are all swept up by the Lord in a gloriously wrought salvation. Our encouragement in these chapters comes simply from drawing deeply on the character and sheer majesty of the One who is and will always be for us in Christ.

A little over 2700 years ago, Jerusalem lay as the last piece of unconquered ground in The Promised Land. The Assyrians had swept away the northern kingdom of Israel and were now bearing down on the city where the Lord dwelt with His people. We read in 2 Kings 18 that the kingdom of Judah was being ruled by un uncommonly godly king, Hezekiah, who:
“… did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles …. He held fast to the LORD and did not stop following him; …. And the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook.” - 2 Kings 18:3-7

But even God-fearing Hezekiah was afraid of the unstoppable power of the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. By the time the Assyrian army arrived at the gates of Jerusalem, Hezekiah had already emptied the royal treasury and stripped the temple of its gold in order to placate Sennacherib. With the city surrounded, the Assyrian king sends his envoy, the Rabshakeh, to threaten and mock both Hezekiah and the Lord.

The Rabshakeh’s speech in Isaiah 36 is fantastic for us to meditate on, as it is full of the same jibes, accusations and petitions that we can expect to hear today as people faithfully trusting Christ. Nothing’s changed!

The Rabshakeh first points out the vast difference in numbers on each side:
“On what are you basing this confidence of yours? You say you have counsel and might for war—but you speak only empty words. … Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses —if you can put riders on them!” - 2 Kings 18:19-23

Some days I feel like the whole world - including my denomination - is telling me that I am on the wrong side of history for my faith in the Bible’s teaching. It often doesn’t seem to me like we have the ‘numbers’, so to speak. And then, too, there are the sweet overtures from all sides persuading the Lord’s people to give up and give in:
“This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, until I come and take you to a land like your own —a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.” - 2 Kings 18:31-32

Whether its publicly contending for Christ’s teaching on sex and marriage or just our daily plod towards glory, the temptation to walk a smoother, pleasanter or wider path will always be there. And even when we resolve to trust in the Lord through all this, we are confronted everywhere in our culture with the heralds of inevitability:
“Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? … How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?” - 2 Kings 18:33-35

The gods of the surrounding nations were no match for Assyria, says the Rabshakeh. And now Sennacherib’s army has swept through to the gates of Jerusalem with ease. When the Assyrians take Jerusalem, as they surely will, the Lord will be just another notch on Sennacherib’s sword. The remnant of the people cannot possibly think that merely trusting in the Lord will allow them to resist the inevitable?

But Hezekiah provides us with wonderful encouragement in Isaiah 37. The prayer he prays when all outcomes appear inevitable is one of the best in Scripture. He offers the Lord no advice (which I am often guilty of doing) and he makes no supplications on behalf of the people’s long suffering and weariness. In the face of catastrophic defeat, he petitions the Lord simply on the basis of the majesty and glory of his name:
“Give ear, LORD, and hear; open your eyes, LORD, and see; listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God. … “It is true, LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are the only God.” - Isaiah 37:17-20

I am resolved this year to make my prayers more like that of Hezekiah. It is true that our 21st century culture has many ‘gods’, and their growth can seem inevitable. Their worshippers are many too. But only one God is the living God. We may grow tired, but He doesn’t; we may grow despondent, but He doesn’t. He will surely deliver His people time and time again, before one day all will bow before His throne:
“I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!” - 2 Kings 19:34

Sennacherib doesn’t set foot in the city. Neither do his armies. Nor the Rabshakeh. No siege ramps are built and not one arrow is fired. Instead, with His people on their knees before Him, the Lord destroys ‘a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp.’ And a little while later, great King Sennacherib is assassinated by his own sons, while worshipping in the temple of his god. He comes to the same end as what he worshipped: nothing.
As well as the promise of salvation to Hezekiah and the people, as an Anglican, I draw particular encouragement from one aspect of the Lord’s response to Sennacherib:
“Have you not heard?
Long ago I ordained it.
In days of old I planned it;
now I have brought it to pass,
that you have turned fortified cities
into piles of stone.” - 2 Kings 19:25

Yes, the Assyrians have the numbers. Yes, they have many horses. But their success has only ever been at the Lord’s will. He had planned it and ordained it. The Lord’s enemies are a mere instrument in His hand. When His people were scared and panicking, He was not surprised by any new threat or development.

In light of these verses, I find myself needing to repent of my despondency at Synod. (That is not at all to say that there is no place for weariness and despair, far from it. A life of relentless stoicism is not required of sheep with so tender a shepherd). Isaiah 36-37 reminds us of the truth that each night we can close our eyes and speak to the same living, unstoppable God who acted 2700 years ago outside Jerusalem. He acted then so that we might know now in 2024 that He will not let his name be defamed. Nothing that happens in our culture, or our churches, or in our lives is outside of His endless care or plan. Nor is anything inevitable. Ever. He sees us, He knows us, and through his Son, our shepherd-king, He is attentive to us at all times.

This article was originally published in the Spring 2024 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. If it were that easy, this article could stop right here! But we all know that we’re tempted to flirt with temptation, particularly sexual temptation. How can we convince ourselves to keep well away from temptation? Let’s use Proverbs 7 as a short three-act drama to illustrate what happens within us when we flirt with temptation and allow ourselves to progress on the stepping stones towards sexual sin. It’s a tragedy in three acts. The quotations below are from The Message translation/paraphrase, as it is quite hard-hitting and might help us to hear familiar verses in a new way.

Act 1 – We walk too close to temptation’s door

“As I stood at the window of my house looking out through the shutters, watching the mindless crowd stroll by, I spotted a young man without any sense. Arriving at the corner of the street where she lived, then turning up the path to her house. It was dusk, the evening coming on, the darkness thickening into night.”
– Proverbs 7:6-12 (The Message)

In this first act, our protagonist is pictured as a foolish young man walking close to the house where he knows the seductress lives: she represents sexual temptation, but really the focus is upon his foolishness in walking close to where she lives.

The passage also mentions the time of day. For this young man, night-time was approaching. For many people, there can be a particular time of day (or time of the week/month/year) associated with vulnerability to sexual temptation – even being aware of when this is for you can help to prepare you to be ready to resist temptation’s pull.

The application for us is to think about the ways we personally might walk in the direction of sexual sin. What are our “stepping stones” towards sexual temptation? These might include:

Places (actual locations where we may have “acted out” sexually in the past)

Websites or apps (places online where temptation is only a click away)

Trains of thought (fantasies or memories, perhaps about particular people from the past, that we know are unhelpful and likely to unsettle or arouse us)

Act 2 – Temptation comes out to meet us

” Just then, a woman met him—she’d been lying in wait for him, dressed to seduce him. Brazen and brash she was, restless and roaming, never at home, walking the streets, loitering in the mall, hanging out at every corner in town. She threw her arms around him and kissed him, boldly took his arm and said, ‘I’ve got all the makings for a feast—today I made my offerings, my vows are all paid, So now I’ve come to find you, hoping to catch sight of your face—and here you are! I’ve spread fresh, clean sheets on my bed, colorful imported linens. My bed is aromatic with spices and exotic fragrances. Come, let’s make love all night, spend the night in ecstatic lovemaking! My husband’s not home; he’s away on business, and he won’t be back for a month.’”
– Proverbs 7:13-20 (The Message)

In the drama, the seductress is lying in wait for the young man, ready to take advantage when he is weak. For us, there might be actual people from the past who would be ready to drag us back into sexual immorality in a moment of weakness.

But in our technological age, we also need to guard against the big organisations that know our weak spots all too well. For example, a streaming service like Netflix can build up over time a surprisingly accurate picture of the type of “click-bait” that will work well on us individually. For each of their products, they have a range of thumbnail images, from which they will pick the one that their algorithm thinks is most likely to make you click on it – perhaps one for this male actor and a different one for that female actress, carefully selected just for you! How do they know? Well, it will be based on your clicking history from the past. And for different people, there might be a streaming service or website or app that is a particular snare. So, Act 2 of this drama particularly invites us to ask ourselves in what ways does sexual sin come out to meet us? And how can we guard against such approaches?

Act 3 – The point of no return

"Soon she has him eating out of her hand, bewitched by her honeyed speech. Before you know it, he’s trotting behind her, like a calf led to the butcher shop, Like a stag lured into ambush and then shot with an arrow, Like a bird flying into a net not knowing that its flying life is over.”
– Proverbs 7:21-23 (The Message)

This is where the drama comes to its tragic conclusion. The young man was out walking in her neighbourhood at night (Act 1). She comes out to meet him and he stops to chat. And he listens as she flatters and sets the stage for the final act (Act 2). And only after all these other things have happened does he finally commit the sexual act (Act 3). At each of these stepping stones, he is free to make a wise decision to turn back, but it becomes increasingly difficult to resist.
By Act 3, the young man has more or less surrendered himself to sexual sin. He is so far down the path of seduction that resistance seems all but impossible. We might think of times when we ourselves have felt helpless to do anything other than to follow through with sexual sin. But we will almost certainly have made unwise decisions earlier on the path to sexual immorality.

Epilogue – This is a serious matter

“So, friends, listen to me, take these words of mine most seriously.
Don’t fool around with a woman like that; don’t even stroll through her neighborhood. Countless victims come under her spell; she’s the death of many a poor man. She runs a halfway house to hell, fits you out with a shroud and a coffin.”
– Proverbs 7:24-27 (The Message)

In the Epilogue, the focus comes upon the unnamed onlooker who is dispensing his words of advice. He calls us to take his warning seriously, and not to fool around with sexual temptation. We should look upon those drawn into sexual immorality with pity, because turning our back on God and embracing sexual sin is a route to spiritual death.

Afterword

Proverbs 7 is a dramatised warning not to go anywhere near sexual temptation. We are all vulnerable to temptation, and the time to protect oneself from being ensnared is not late at night, when we are tired and triggered. Rather, this passage invites us to steer well away from temptation’s door, to be very conscious of how particular people and devices might approach us at moments of weakness, and to be under no illusions about the ability of sexual temptation to entangle us and lead us away from God. We can be thankful to God for the wisdom of this book – let us take these words most seriously.

This article was originally published in the Winter 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. I was challenged recently with the question of whether giving up a sinful relationship really can be counted as a sacrifice. Is it not merely an act of obedience?

A life of spiritual sacrifice is one that is wholeheartedly given over to God

What is a spiritual sacrifice?

This got me thinking about what the Bible teaches us as Christians about sacrifice. The Cambridge Dictionary definition of sacrifice is “to give up something for something else considered more important”. But what does the Bible say? The vast majority of references in the Bible, even in the New Testament, refer to the temple sacrifices as atonements for sin: the blood of animals was shed as a substitution for our sin. But the book of Hebrews makes it very clear that this type of sacrifice is no longer required for those who trust in Jesus’ work on the cross. This is because “where [sins] have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.” (Hebrews 10:18).

However, following Jesus is more than a passive receiving of his work on the cross: Jesus says, “whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me”. The cross is a picture of self-sacrifice: Jesus is inviting us to lives of self-sacrifice too.
The New Testament does have some references to what sacrifice looks like for Christians: Peter calls us “to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ”. Sacrifices now no longer involve the killing of animals (remember, Jesus has taken care of sin on the cross); but the call of every believer to sacrificial discipleship involves “spiritual sacrifices”. Prior to Christ’s death, believers needed to take their physical offerings to the priests who would sacrifice the animals on their behalf. In Christ, however, every believer is a holy priest, able to make their own spiritual sacrifices in the way they live their lives. But what does this mean in practice? Well, the author of Hebrews calls us to “continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise” (Hebrew 13:15) and not to “forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrew 13:16). So, worship and good works are spiritual sacrifices. A life of spiritual sacrifice is one that is wholeheartedly given over to God.

What’s this got to do with same-sex relationships?

The Apostle Paul applies the language of sacrifice specifically to our bodies:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:1-2)
Paul’s “therefore” takes this idea of our bodies being living sacrifices and links it to the argument that he has been building in chapters 1-11 of Romans. In particular, it is in stark contrast to the degradation of bodies described at the start of the letter:
“Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.” (Romans 1:24)
Whereas ungodly people are given over to sexual impurity and specifically same-sex activity (Romans 1:26-27), the Christian by contrast is called to offer his/her body as a living sacrifice, which does “not conform to the pattern of this world”. It seems that Paul is actually saying that sexual purity, abstaining from the sexual immorality so prevalent in our world, is an act of living sacrifice, which is “your true and proper worship”.

Worshipping through sacrifice

It is really important to remember though, that our sacrificial lives aren't in any way a payment to God. Our sacrifice is a response to the great news of the gospel, that Jesus has become the ultimate sacrifice for us. That's particularly clear in the Romans passage - we are to offer ourselves up “in view of God's mercy” rather not to gain God's mercy by our own merits!

When we think about offering our bodies as living sacrifices, we need to be careful to avoid any feelings of pride in doing so. God has ordered this world, and He’s made it clear that none of us is entitled to a same-sex union. Even though aligning our lives with God’s ways involves sacrificing our desires, we shouldn’t pity ourselves or allow a sense of martyrdom to take hold. Rather, we should present this sacrifice with a genuine attitude of “true and proper worship”.

Our culture tells the celibate person, “don’t waste your life!”, but no sacrifice is wasted in God’s economy. On the contrary, it is magnified. I am reminded of the story of when David was hiding from Saul in the Cave of Adullam and his body “longed for water” (2 Samuel 23:13-17). His companions took great risks against the enemy to bring water back to David from Bethlehem. Rather than drinking the water, however, he poured it out on the ground as an act of worship. His sacrifice demonstrated to those around him that his God meant more to him than his bodily appetites. By giving up this temporary treasure, which would have greatly satisfied his thirst, it was transformed in God’s sight into an eternal treasure in heaven. Likewise, when we offer our “bodies as a living sacrifice”, by abstaining from bodily desires, we worship God and show him to be the one who is greater than any temporary gratification. Indeed, our sacrifices demonstrate to us/others what we really value in life. Such acts of worship actually build our faith and are an amazing witness to those around us.

This article was originally published in the Winter 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. But plenty of people select that as a mere label.

I have lots of Christian books on my bookshelves. But you could take the view that I’m just an interested student: after all there are plenty of atheists studying theology!

I attend church on a Sunday. But you might say that I just go because I enjoy the social side and it makes me feel better about myself!

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with any of these trappings of faith. But each of them can be easily explained by motives that have nothing to do with saving faith. If these surface-level indicators are all I’ve got, how can I know that my faith is real in the eyes of God? Sacrifice reminds us that we are done with sin

We need to value God’s favour more than we fear the criticism of the watching world

In the book of 1 Peter, the Apostle Peter writes about living godly lives in the midst of a society that does not know the living God. He tells believers that they belong to another kingdom, and so will be “foreigners and exiles” in this life (1 Peter 2:11). He prepares Christians to expect to “suffer for what is right” (1 Peter 3:14) and that non-Christians will “speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ.” In itself, this sounds rather tough and a bit discouraging. But. actually, Peter intends to show us how this position of being distinctive and facing opposition actually helps to remind us who we really are:

“Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.” – 1 Peter 4:1

Choosing to suffer with Jesus (or make sacrifice for Him) is exactly when faith becomes real. It’s easy to “do Christianity” when it is comfortable. At the point when following Jesus becomes truly sacrificial, this can be for many people the decisive moment when His lordship is made clear. If we take a stand against our culture’s values and surrender everything to God, it is then truly apparent (to our culture, to God and to ourselves) that we are serious about our faith. But “taking a stand” here isn’t so much about external actions, like signing petitions or lobbying decision makers in power. Rather, it is for me to have a serious conversation with myself about whether I am going to take up my cross and live for Jesus in a way that is costly.

Unglamorous acts of worship

Such sacrifice is not glamorous and it’s rarely going to win acclaim from those around us. The way of the cross is a quiet, often unnoticed discipline. It should not feed our pride, nor be trying to impress God. But living distinctive lives, where our sacrifice is real to us every day, reassures us that we are truly His. We will be prepared for when hard times come, when opposition is fierce, and when doubts emerge in our own minds. We will already have trodden the path of decisive discipleship. We will look back and see that we chose this narrow path a long time ago, and we will be less inclined to turn back.

“As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.” – 1 Peter 4:2

Let me be clear that I’m not proposing sacrifice for its own sake. Going on a tough diet or making yourself take cold showers does not make you holy! Indeed, many non-Christians make huge sacrifices for their career, their children, their body image or even to set themselves up for a dream retirement. But these kinds of sacrifices are not what Peter is calling us to here. In Colossians 2:23, the Apostle Paul challenges the value of self-denial as an end in itself: “Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.” Rather, our sacrificial choices must be acts of worship that align us with our suffering Saviour: “[we] do not live the rest of [our] earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God”. The purpose of our sacrifice is all-important: if we sacrifice out of obedience to God, it can transform a decision from one of grim determination into one of joyful service.

For the same-sex attracted believer, their sacrifice may become very apparent in their relationship decisions. Some people will sense a call to singleness - their unmarried state will be a constant reminder to them that they are set apart from the world’s insistence upon an active sex life. Instead, their spiritual life comes from their obedient determination to stay sexually pure. Other same-sex attracted people may be able to get married to someone of the opposite sex: often these marriages can be wonderful, albeit not without their challenges. But, even for those who marry according to the biblical definition of marriage, their decision to resist the lure of a same-sex marriage is a reminder to them that they have chosen the narrow way.

Getting off the fence

Sometimes faithful Christians look at the debauchery of the world and think, “They look like they’re having fun. Am I missing out?” But Peter reminds us that we are now to consider those behaviours as being from a past life:

“For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do - living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.” - 1 Peter 4:3

Do we ever look back on memories of old sin with fondness? If so, we need to take Peter’s words here to heart. Our past lives may have been governed by sensual indulgence. But that was the past life. Indeed, that was a wasted life. Nothing in those behaviours has any lasting value. On the contrary, that old way of living darkened our lives and took us further away from God. The closer we are aligned with the will of God, the more we will see the past life as a waste of time and lose our appetite for it. In contrast, the longer we sit on the fence, and toy with old desires, the more we will taunt ourselves with old passions, and risk returning to the wasted life. If we can not only get off the fence, but walk well away from the fence, then we will increasingly see the old ways of living as consigned to history. We won’t be tempted to peek through the knotholes in the fence at old temptations, and they will increasingly lose their grip on us. Practically speaking, this probably starts with the radical disposal of any objects or contacts that connect us with that past life. But other people may be offended by our choice to abstain from their way of living:

“They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.” - 1 Peter 4:4

We need to be ready for criticism. Leaving behind “wild living” will certainly stir up surprise. And Peter tells us that people may respond to our withdrawal from these behaviours with abuse, perhaps interpreting our abstinence as being judgemental. We certainly shouldn’t adopt a disapproving posture towards them, but we can’t stop our pure living shining a light on their lives. Indeed, we enjoy fellowship with God when we walk in the light (1 John 1:7). To prepare for inevitable criticism, we need to value God’s favour more than we fear the criticism of the watching world.

The reality of our faith

Do we ever doubt the reality of our faith? How can we convince ourselves that we are true believers and not just superficial ones? After all, Jesus told his disciples that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 7:21).

In summary, 1 Peter 4:1-4 shows us a way to demonstrate that our faith is real. If we can look back on genuine sacrifices that we have made in our Christian lives, then we can see decisions that only make sense if we have faith in God. We will be encouraged and assured that our faith is real. And as we continue to put distance between our new life and our old “wasted life”, we will know that we are set apart from the world and its ways. Our attitude to costly living need not be a reluctant, self-pitying one. Peter calls us to “arm [ourselves]” (1 Peter 4:1) with Christ’s attitude of embracing sacrifice, because it sets us apart and helps us to know that we are His forever.

This article was originally published in the Autumn 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. She was summing up a dozen or so scriptures on the topic of making our election sure, and what a powerful word-picture this statement brings to mind! As Christians, we’ve been called out—we are God’s ekklesia, his representatives on earth. Even so, how strong is the lure to take on the various hues of the world and literally blend back in—just like a salamander.

For the same-sex attracted (SSA) Christian, God’s “calling-out” can feel like double jeopardy – battling on two fronts at the same time. We have the responsibility of “shining our light” in darkness (Matthew 5:13-15) and being “in the world, but not of the world” (John 17:14-16; Romans 12:2). But more and more we feel called out even within the church, as biblical morality is questioned and swapped for something more “affirming.” In this climate, being called out feels less like standing firm and more like swimming upriver. It can be exhausting and, at times, lonely. We aren’t alone, of course. Christ promises us His presence in our struggle (Matthew 28:20) and even offers to make our burden “light” (Matthew 11:30). Like Him, we choose to be “in, but not of.” But what exactly does this mean for us in the day-to-day?

By keeping to God’s ancient paths, we will find enduring rest for our souls

Called out—for what?

Called out means standing out. This means we are to be different from non-Christians. The most distinctive feature of our lives is the cross, which we both fall before and take up daily (Matthew 10:38). This means we set Christ’s commands above our own whims, knowing that doing so affords us blessing, both in this life and the next:
“Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” – Matthew 19:29

We seek the approval of God more than that of other people—including, perhaps, that of fellow Christians. In doing so, we keep close to our hearts Paul’s instruction not to “conform to the pattern of the world” (Romans 12:2). Since we have hope beyond this life, we live according to a higher perspective.

We stand out among “revisionist” Christians. By submitting to the plain teaching of the Bible even when it doesn’t coincide with our intuition, we keep to the ancient path spoken of by Jeremiah 6:16, trusting that by doing so, we will find enduring rest for our souls. Our actions shine light on false teaching and give us confidence to contend for the truth.
“Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls” – Jeremiah 6:16

We stand out among homophobic Christians. Being regenerated by Christ, we strive to be “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14), proclaiming an unswerving gospel tempered with compassion and forgiveness. Christ welcomed sinners into His presence and was not afraid to spend time with people different from him.

We seek to build up the downtrodden. More often than not, the sacrifices and denials of being tempted towards those of the same sex have equipped us with special sensitivity to the hurts and needs of others, especially those worse off than we are. By challenging such social ills as bullying and inequality, we remind the world that the muscular love of Christ is alive and well.

We are not superior or judgmental, but rather we humble ourselves even in adversity, since we have a strong, trustworthy advocate. Nor do we avoid those who disagree with us; though we are “shrewd as vipers” in our engagements with the world and even with fellow Christians, we remain in all our activities “as innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).

Specific ways Christians stand out:

We season our conversations with those who disagree so as to be “full of grace” (Colossians 4:6) and the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13).

We shine our light clearly to all, not just to friends, family, and fellow believers (Matthew 5: 43-47), keeping in mind that we are “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

We are not easily discouraged when the world and its institutions respond to us with hostility or even hatred. Christ has warned that it will hate us because it hates Him (John 15:18-25):

“You do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” – John 15:19

Despite all this, we take strides to “keep [ourselves] from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27).

Ways SSA Christians stand out:

We don’t “fit” worldly expectations of marriage and family and may even be viewed as curiosities in our marital status—or absence thereof. We may be single (and not seeking a spouse) or married to a person of the sex to which we are not primarily attracted.

We defend and uphold the biblical definition of marriage, even though it doesn’t fit our personal orientation.

We might feel little in common with “straight” people and “straight” culture (sport, entertainment, social activities); at the same time, we might express little or no commonality with the mainstream LGBTQIA+ community.

All of these points can be summed up with Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (6:9). By cooperating with our calling—to stand out without blending back in—we not only attest to Christ’s love and grace but also secure a great reward, in this life and the next.

This article was originally published in the Autumn 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. TFT is long established, having been founded in 1977, and provides one of the largest support networks for Christians experiencing same-sex attraction and/or gender incongruence we are aware of anywhere in the world. Attached to this, we also have a speaking and teaching ministry that works closely with churches, networks and Bible colleges to deliver events that are closely tailored to their individual needs. No two events are the same. One thing I commonly hear when I go out and speak is how helpful churches find it to have a living example of someone showing the plausibility of experiencing the cost of discipleship in this area. No matter how prepared a church is to exposit the biblical teaching on sexual ethics, the element of personal testimony is usually something that can only be brought in via outside help.

In short, we believe that TFT is uniquely placed to show, through both our teaching and the lives of our members, the hope that the gospel offers for those who experience same-sex attraction or gender incongruence and wish to hold to the historic teaching of the church. However, one thing that TFT isn’t is a campaigning organisation. TFT is grateful for the voices of other Christian organisations that speak into the public arena. We feel this enables us to protect and spend our time focusing on supporting our membership. This policy, however, means we have to carefully consider how to raise the profile of our ministry. We want the people who need us to know we are here for them, but we don’t want to do it in a way that attracts unwanted attention that may distract from our objectives.

We’re grateful that several churches and networks already have committed to supporting us financially and/or praying for us. Many of these connections have come through our speaking and teaching ministry, as churches have kept in touch with us following a visit from one of our speakers. We continue to invite churches to partner with us in this way. However, we’re aware that the strongest partnerships often happen through personal connections. We’re thankful for those TFT members who have shared openly with their church leaders about their involvement in our ministry. We appreciate this can be an incredibly brave thing to do. This sometimes leads to those church leaders contacting us about others in their care. In the coming months, TFT plans to make it easier for those wanting to talk to their leadership about their involvement in TFT by producing some resources specifically designed for sharing with them to introduce what we do. Where these introductions turn into deeper relationships, we also plan to release periodic updates for all churches and networks who partner with us, to keep them informed about our work and offer them some ways they can pray for us.

In addition, we’re also exploring how the work of TFT can enjoy an increased presence at Christian conferences and festivals across the UK and Ireland. At our National Conference last year, several of our members approached us to tell us about the conferences and networks that matter to them. We’ve been in touch with several of the organisations behind these this year and hope to exhibit at some of them in the months and years ahead. Our staff team is also exploring opportunities to contribute to other Christian media. Given our pastoral experience, we again feel we’re uniquely placed to help with what so many individuals and churches are struggling with at the moment - how to show that the historic biblical teaching in these areas is also compassionate and loving.

All the above initiatives rely on the grace of God expressed through the generosity of our membership. We’re always keen to hear from members who may want some support sharing about their involvement in TFT with their church leadership. In addition, our plans to exhibit at other Christian events require not just funds, but members who are enthusiastic about the ministry of TFT and can communicate our beliefs and aims effectively to others. If either of these people are you, get in touch with us in the TFT office. We do not expect volunteers helping us with conference exhibits to pay their own expenses, and we’ll support you to respond sensitively to questions or requests for support. If neither of these people are you, but you’re an individual or church looking to get involved, we want to hear from you too! We love working with individuals and churches in partnership, as we encourage others in the joy of following the Lord Jesus Christ.

This article was originally published in the Summer 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. I was surprised when an updated version was recently released. But what are the differences in the two editions?

Changes

Thankfully Sam hasn’t changed his stance or theology, but his terminology. Rather than using the descriptor ‘homosexual’, he now uses ‘same-sex attracted’ (SSA). The original book was 91 pages long, this is 121 pages. Sam explains that the focus in the world has shifted in the last 10 years from asking, “What does the Bible says about gay people?” to “Is Christianity good news at all for gay people?” The objection is that Christianity can’t be good news for gay people, but Sam wisely points people to Jesus first before explaining why it is. He has added more questions: “Does Jesus ever mention same-sex relationships?” and “Aren’t people just born this way?” The end of chapters now have more space to answer each question.

Suitable for a non-Christian ?

The fundamental issue when dealing with questions from non-Christians about same-sex relationships is the gospel and Sam plays out various scenarios. I think that this book would be good to give to a non-Christian friend who may want to know what Christians believe on the subject. Sam also does a good job of explaining how the gospel impacted his own life, how his same-sex attraction affected his walk with Jesus and how Jesus is the answer to all his struggles. I would also recommend investing in this book for literature stands at church, even if you have the original.

Worth the money?

The question is whether for £6.99 it is worth the upgrade? That is a decision for you to make, but my overall opinion would be if you have the original book, you’re not missing out on much if you don’t upgrade. But if you want to see the changes and read the new parts, then obviously buy the updated version, but perhaps wait for a sale!

This article was originally published in the Summer 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend. What I discovered was how disheartened they were about the prospect of outreach in an area that has an established history of hostility to Bible-believing Christianity.

Indeed, many same-sex attracted Christians have moved out of this area, finding it to be too tough a place in which to live as Christians. The town has around 10% of its population identifying as LGBT, whereas only 1% would call themselves evangelical Christians. Many solid evangelical churches in the town have chosen the strategy of not engaging with LGBT events such as Pride, because they’ve found it too risky. Whereas most of us probably don’t find ourselves in towns as unreceptive as Brighton to the Bible’s teaching on sexuality, Christians do generally find themselves on the back foot in Western culture today when it comes to making the case for biblical truth.

Our own stories are powerful testimonies of how it is possible to conform our desires to Jesus’ teaching

The Apostle Paul, in Acts 17:16-34, found himself in Athens, a cultural hotbed of trendy ideas. It seems that he hadn’t intended to go there, but found himself in this cosmopolitan city after his minders whisked him away from the trouble stirred up by his preaching in Berea (Acts 17:13-15). Similar to modern-day secular society, Paul’s biblical beliefs were sneered at by the cultural elites, who found his ideas novel, but rather peculiar (Acts 17:18). However, he was not cowed by this hostile reception: on the contrary, he explained the gospel to the Areopagus, the ruling council of elders (Acts 17:19). But the way that he engaged with the Athenians was sensitive to their culture (Acts 17:22-31).

A unique opportunity

We might wonder why Paul didn’t just take a mini-sabbatical in Athens, while he waited to get back on to his missional programme (which he did in Acts 18:1, as he set out to Corinth). In Acts 17:16, we can see the reason for this - “While Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols”. Paul allowed himself to be spiritually open to the lostness of the Athenian people. He was more concerned about their spiritual welfare than he was about receiving a warm reception. He knew that he was God’s appointed apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 11:13), and he made the most of his short, albeit unexpected, time in Athens.

Like the Epicurean philosophies that Paul was facing in Athens (Acts 17:18), our culture encourages us to live a life dedicated to pleasure. And for those of us who personally experience same-sex attractions, we understand the appeal! We are perhaps uniquely qualified to build bridges with LGBT friends and family and neighbours. In a postmodern world that elevates personal experience above reasoned argument, our own stories are powerful testimonies of how it is possible to restrain our desires in-line with Jesus’ teaching. For some people though, especially those who were active in the LGBT community before following Jesus, this particular type of outreach may be unwise if it reawakens strong temptations through places or people from our past.

Building bridges

In reflecting on these matters, we might sense God calling us to bring the gospel to LGBT people. But how can we regain our confidence in the goodness of biblical teaching on sexuality? And how can we build bridges with people who might seem so hostile to the Bible? Paul’s example in Athens gives us a few principles that we can use today.

1. Don’t assume bad intent

Firstly, let’s not assume bad intent in other people. When Paul first started reasoning in the synagogue and the marketplace in Athens (Acts 17:17), he was received with a mixture of contempt (“What is this babbler trying to say?” - v18) and some slightly patronising interest (Acts 17:19). The Athenians were renowned for elevating novelty over truth – “[they] spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas” (Acts 17:20). However, Paul didn’t let their disdain and condescension put him off from making his case. After sharing the gospel, some continued to mock him (Acts 17:32). Now he might have been right about some of the Athenians if he’d dismissed them as hedonists and intellectual snobs, but he would have been wrong about some of them too - “Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed” (Acts 17:34).

Likewise, let us not bracket all LGBT people into one mould. Let us not presume bad intent. Let us not assume anyone is too far from Jesus to be saved. Let us not even interpret initial hostility as permanent disinterest. After all, Colossians 1:21 says of us, “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behaviour.” Imagine if those who pointed us to Jesus had been put off because of our initial ambivalence, antagonism or mixed motives?!

2. Be curious about others

Secondly, let’s be curious about others. Paul did not walk about Athens wearing a sandwich board stating a true but insensitive Bible verse, such as, “I will pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols” (Leviticus 26:30). No. Before he spoke, Paul did his homework. He walked around the city and observed their practices. He found an altar to an unknown god (Acts 17:23) and used this as a cultural bridge to explain to the Athenians the character of the God of the Bible (Acts 17:24-27). He studied their writings and quoted the wisdom of some of their philosophers back to them, in order to explain the gospel using ideas that they might connect with (Acts 17:28).

Likewise, let us express interest in the personal lives of our LGBT friends and family. Paul wasn’t worrying that he would somehow be contaminated by examining the Athenians’ idols, or that he would be mistaken as approving of their idol worship. As we ask questions, we demonstrate our warmth and care for the other person. Many of us as Christians know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the implicit hostility communicated by non-Christians, who pointedly avoid any reference to our faith. Instead of that passive-aggressive approach, let’s express genuine interest in other people’s lives, even when we may strongly disagree with the choices they have made.

3. Make the case

Thirdly, once we’ve earned the right to speak, let us make the case for what we believe. Despite the philosophical and cultural divide between Paul and the Athenians, he made the case there to all – “He reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there” (Acts 17:17). He didn’t second-guess how they might respond, and left it in God’s sovereign hands to convict people of the truth.

Likewise, when a suitable time and setting arrives, let’s explain the gospel to our LGBT friends and colleagues. We can’t assume that the other person understands Jesus’ heart for them. Even if they think they know what the Bible teaches, have they really encountered the grace of Jesus?

Do we need to undo the damage done by clumsy or homophobic Christians in the past? We can begin with the positives, in the same way that Paul commended the Athenians for their worship - “I see that in every way you are very religious” (Acts 17:22). Paul didn’t attack them for their idol worship, but rather highlighted their impulse to worship and showed them the God who deserved it.

There is so much in the the Bible that is good news to LGBT people and we need to start with that. Of course, there is costly discipleship for every Christian, and the cost of giving up a same-sex relationship is massively countercultural. But let’s get that in proportion. Far more than a sexual partner, our loved ones need eternal life in the Lord Jesus. Let us love them enough to share the wonderful truth with them. Yes, we will need to be prepared to respond to questions about sexuality, in due course. But we can soften these truths by phrasing the message sensitively and by sharing how we have followed these truths in our own lives.

Concluding thoughts

In my outreach, I think the person who first needs to be reminded of the good news of Jesus is me! If I only focus in my mind on the cost of giving up a same-sex partner, but I’ve lost the eternal perspective and the joy of knowing Jesus, then I’m going to be reluctant to share the gospel with others. Let us continue to preach the good news to our own souls. Then we will be motivated to reach out to the lost. We’ll not assume bad intent in others, but rather build bridges with them and make the case for the greatest gift anyone can ever receive.

This article was originally published in the Summer 2023 edition of the TFT magazine, Ascend.
